This two-part monograph consists, first, of a compilation of the non-newspaper books and pamphlets published by the E. J. Hale & Son company from 1825-1864 in Fayetteville, North Carolina, during the time Edward Jones Hale was editor of the Fayetteville Observer newspaper, and, secondly, of the books published by the E. J. Hale & Son company from1867-1889 during its period of operation in New York. For convenience of the researcher, a note is made of the location of physical copies of each item at the time of its discovery for cataloging. So far as is known by the compiler, no other catalog exists of the publications of this company, which specialized in Southern literature, history, and politics but also issued works by Sir Walter Scott, Charles Dickens and others. Hale relocated to New York in 1866 after his newspaper and publishing plant in Fayetteville, North Carolina, were destroyed at the close of the Civil War. Initially, he opened a stationery and school supply store but soon began publishing books by Southern authors whose works were shunned by most national publishing houses. Over time, he broadened the scope of his subject matter. Among the authors he published were Alexander Hamilton Stephens, Henry Timrod, Paul Hamilton Hayne, Robert Lewis Dabney, William Bradford Reed, Felix Gregory De Fontaine, Henry Elliot Shepherd, Mary Mason, George James Atkinson Coulson, Edgar Fawcett, Elizabeth Avery Meriwether, Maurice Thompson, Bishop John Stark Ravenscroft, Bishop Thomas Atkinson, Francis Lister Hawks, and Edwin W. Fuller.
